Synthesis of Current Literature
All of the current literature collected data to analyze and support physical activity and wellness of children and adults. All of the literature reviews support the importance of incorporating the physical activity in the classroom. Pendergast Elementary school is currently a level C rating according to the Principal (Woosley, 2014). According to the Arizona Report Cards for AIMS, students at Pendergast scored 70% in Reading in 2014 AIMS testing. According the Activity Burst in the classroom study, their measured progress reports have found children participating in the ABC program have shown improvement in their reading scores.
A common relationship among physical activity and health has been shown throughout all studies and studies do not contradict each other. The Leisure Time Physical Activity of Moderate to Vigorous Intensity and Mortality study and the Association Between Sedentary Behavior, Physical Activity and Obesity both studied different intensity levels of activity and shows a direct link between the amount of activity and one’s health. The Activity Burst in the classroom, Promoting Physical Activity in Children and Youth, and Association Between Sedentary Behavior, Physical Activity and Obesity were all conducted in a school setting. The data collected supports the benefit of implementing physical activity in the classroom, which support our purpose of incorporating the physical activity pyramid. The Activity Burst in the classroom and Promoting Physical Activity in Children both data collected showed a positive outcome of implementing physical activity in a classroom setting to improve children’s health and wellness. In contrast, Nutrition and Physical Activity in Child Care Centers and Leisure Time Physical Activity of Moderate to Vigorous Intensity and Mortality, studies were completed outside of a school setting. This data shows the importance of incorporating physical activity in the classroom. The physical activity pyramid can help, guide, and support students and adults to include physical activity in their everyday lifestyles. To compare and contrast, the literature review, Nutrition and Physical Activity in Child Care Centers, was the only study to focus on the nutritional view point of children’s overall health. To become aware of physical education, applying learned strategies, and implementing the physical activity pyramid will help support children’s overall wellness and health.
